Why are so many Local Government Attorneys of Virginia (LGA) members William & Mary Law School graduates?

For starters, William & Mary Law School boasts a remarkable history as the nation's first law school and a reputation for producing lawyers who are both highly skilled, successful attorneys and dedicated public servants. Our diverse student body features candidates with outstanding credentials and training.

Thanks to the following financial and academic support, our law students and recent graduates enjoy many opportunities to develop substantive legal experience while volunteering in city and county attorney internships and temporary post-graduate positions:

  • Summer Public Service Fellowship Program: Every summer, approximately 100 students receive stipends to work in unpaid government and public interest positions.

  • Externship Program: During the school year, students who volunteer for local government law offices earn academic credit for their work.

  • Post-Graduate Public Service Fellowships: When funds are available, 3L students pursuing post-graduate positions in local government law offices may apply for short-term, temporary stipends to support their volunteer fellowships while they await their Virginia Bar Exam results.

  • Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP): Recent graduates working in local government law offices may apply for LRAP.

We invite you to recruit our accomplished law students and graduates dedicated to careers in public service.

Thank you for the opportunity to assist you with your legal hiring needs and support the 2021 LGA Spring Conference.
