Who We Are

The Local Government Attorneys of Virginia, Inc. (LGA) was founded in 1975
Our members are
  • Cities, counties, and towns of the Commonwealth, represented by their civil legal counsel
  • Governmental organizations
  • Private law firms that specialize in local government matters
  • Members of the judiciary

LGA has over 300 members, represented by more than 800 public and private attorneys

What We Do

  • Provide CLE credit specifically focused on local government law
  • Furnish information and support to assist local government attorneys in performing the duties of their positions
  • Offer a forum for communication and exchange of ideas of import to local government attorneys
  • Address litigation or legislation that is significant to Virginia local governments
  • File amicus briefs when litigation is generally significant to local government

The Benefits of Membership

The Members' Section consists of additional searchable content that is available only to LGA members, including the LGA listserv, the membership directory, the LGA Handbook, current and past conference handouts, current and past issues of the Bill of Particulars, and LGA committee work product, such as model ordinances and legal memoranda.

Member News

Helivi Holland, City Attorney in Suffolk and LGA Board Member, has been appointed as an ABA Advisor to the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws Study on State Governance during Public Health Emergencies. The ABA Government & Public Sector Lawyers Division recommended Helivi for the position based on her rich state and local government experience, which should prove very valuable to the Study.

The LGA Awards and Recognition Committee is now soliciting nominations for the following awards and recognitions to be presented at the LGA Fall 2020 Conference, which is scheduled to be held from October 15-17, 2020, at the Marriott Virgina Beach Oceanfront. For each of the awards, please send your nomination(s) to LGA Awards and Recognition Chair Clarke Whitefield ([email protected]). Please state the reasons you believe the nominee should receive the award, along with any other pertinent information. All nominations must be received by Wednesday, July 15, 2020. For more information about these awards and recognitions, go to the LGA website (lgava.org) and click on the “Awards & Recognitions” button.
