Who We Are

The Local Government Attorneys of Virginia, Inc. (LGA) was founded in 1975
Our members are
  • Cities, counties, and towns of the Commonwealth, represented by their civil legal counsel
  • Governmental organizations
  • Private law firms that specialize in local government matters
  • Members of the judiciary

LGA has over 300 members, represented by more than 800 public and private attorneys

What We Do

  • Provide CLE credit specifically focused on local government law
  • Furnish information and support to assist local government attorneys in performing the duties of their positions
  • Offer a forum for communication and exchange of ideas of import to local government attorneys
  • Address litigation or legislation that is significant to Virginia local governments
  • File amicus briefs when litigation is generally significant to local government

The Benefits of Membership

The Members' Section consists of additional searchable content that is available only to LGA members, including the LGA listserv, the membership directory, the LGA Handbook, current and past conference handouts, current and past issues of the Bill of Particulars, and LGA committee work product, such as model ordinances and legal memoranda.

Member News

After over 23 years as the Washington County Attorney, Lucy Phillips retired at the end of February, although she will continue to provide legal services to the County until the position is filled. Among other roles, Lucy served as the 2010-2011 President of the LGA and currently serves on the Board of Governors of the Local Government Law Section of the Virginia State Bar. Lucy will remain in private practice in Abingdon. Congratulations and best wishes, Lucy!
